The dunes lie on Kurnell Peninsula seen extending into the distance where Captain Cook first set foot on Australian soil and the site of first contact between the English and the Indigenous Australians in New South Wales. The refinery still exists, blotting the horizon. Owned by Caltex, it ceased operations in In recent years, the dune landscape has been transformed by residential developments. The Australand development pictured is part of a 32ha site on a former sandmine.
Permission for the residential development was granted in This photograph, taken from atop one of the largest dunes, shows the sand in the foreground, the historic heart of Cronulla in the distance and the recently completed residential development in between. Where there were once eight-metre deep manmade lakes caused by sandmining, there are now luxury properties and paved streets.
Interpretive Centre & Museum
Most of the original plots are now developed, but some remain vacant. An adjacent 13ha site located to the south, which has been owned by the Breen family for 66 years, is also being transformed into a residential development. Construction at the site began in February and is due for completion in The site flanks the Don Lucas Reserve on one side pictured and Cronulla high school on the other.
For the once pristine sand dune environment, human interference over the past century has had a huge cost. All graduates will have the option of doing a walk-through at a future ceremony.
