Once you find the bus routes or train station you'll be fine. Although public transport around Bracken Ridge is not great it is in a good area generally. The Redcliffe area has been mentioned however the nearby Sandgate area is very popular for a number of reasons - cafes and restaurants, windsurfing, seaside fun.
And there are also bike paths that can take you a long way in many directions. There is a third train station on the Caboolture line, Bald Hills. Access to the Bruce Highway is handy to go north to the Sunshine Coast and beyond as is the Gateway motorway to go to the airport and Gold Coast. There are the Tinchi Tamba Wetlands a short car ride away. Bracken Ridge also has quite an old Cemetery up on the hill, nice to wander around, couple of local grocery shopping areas and in close proximity to larger shopping areas such as Chermside , Toombul, Strathpine and Redcliffe.
The area also has great access to the main North South access highway motorway to get up to the Sunshine Coast or down to the Gold Coast.
Heaps to see and do in the greater Brisbane area as well. If its not too late - as others have said Public Transport is pretty good, so you can get around easily. I would highly recommend that you go into the Brisbane Visitors Information centre, they will give you a lot of information and suggestions of things to see and do - if you ask them for that info.
