Beginning in , he commanded a major mission to the South Pacific and during the next three years explored the Antarctic region, charted the New Hebrides, and discovered New Caledonia.
In , he sailed from England again as commander of the H. Resolution and Discovery and in made his first visit to the Hawaiian Islands. Cook provisioned his ships by trading the metal, and his sailors traded iron nails for sex. It is suspected that the Hawaiians attached religious significance to the first stay of the Europeans on their islands. After one of the crewmembers died, exposing the Europeans as mere mortals, relations became strained.
On February 4, , the British ships sailed from Kealakekua Bay, but rough seas damaged the foremast of the Resolution, and after only a week at sea the expedition was forced to return to Hawaii. The Hawaiians greeted Cook and his men by hurling rocks; they then stole a small cutter vessel from the Discovery. Venture to the northern end of town and join the locals for a refreshing dip in Brunswick Pool or a picnic by the Brunswick River on the shady lawns. Barbecues, toilets, gazebos and a playground make it a perfect spot to spend a lazy afternoon.

The area is among the best-served by public transport in Melbourne, with Jewell , Brunswick and Anstey stations serving the suburb, on the Upfield railway line. Brunswick itself is relatively flat and is ideal for cycling. Streets in Brunswick vary, from too narrow for two cars to pass, to reasonably wide.
Not all of the wider streets have cycle lanes, though even riding in lanes in the narrower street often means riding close to parked cars, presenting a significant hazard to cyclists from opening car doors. The most prominent structures in Brunswick are the heritage listed chimneys of Hoffmann's brickworks on Dawson Street. At their base, one of the brick kilns has been preserved, though the remainder of this site has been redeveloped as medium-density attached housing and low-rise apartment blocks.

Of the newer structures, the four new buildings at the RMIT University campus on Dawson Street are of notable contemporary character, each having its own unique architectural style, with two buildings by noted Melbourne architect John Wardle. The Brunswick Community Health Centre, on Glenlyon Road, completed in the late s, presents a collection of eclectic, differently coloured forms juxtaposed on a small site.
